| Brassaï, professional name of Gyula Halasz
(1899-1984), French photographer, born in Brassó, Hungary (now Braşov, Romania),
best known for his studies of Paris by night. His first photographs, published
in book form in 1933, include scenes of Parisian streets, bridges, and tourists.
He then turned to photographs of so-called night people—dancehall girls,
drinkers, lovers, streetwalkers, hoodlums—whom he recorded with an impartial
eye. He also wrote Henry Miller, grandeur nature (1975; translated as
Henry Miller: The Paris Years, 1995), which he illustrated with his own
photographs dating from 1930 to 1939. |

For me, there is only one criterion for a good
photograph: that it be unforgettable.
