Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), American jazz
pianist and composer, who during the 1940s, with the saxophonist Charlie Parker
and the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, was one of the creators of the bebop style in
jazz. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Because of his unorthodox,
“homemade” piano technique and what was perceived as the inscrutability of his
compositions, his following was small until the mid-1950s, when the depth and
complexity of his music began to be recognized. Thereafter Monk established
himself among the leading composers of jazz, writing most often for small groups
and concentrating increasingly on formal innovations. Many of Monk's works have
become jazz classics, including 'Round Midnight; Criss Cross; Epistrophy;
Well, You Needn't; and Blue Monk. |
